Day 1 · Rational Numbers: Properties and Operations

Today let's learn about rational numbers!

One step at a time

Let's explore today's lesson

4 learning moments

A rational number is any number that can be written as p/q, where p and q are integers and q is not zero! For example, 3/4, -5/2, 7 (since 7 = 7/1).

Rational numbers are closed under addition, subtraction, and multiplication — adding, subtracting, or multiplying two rational numbers always gives a rational number.

2/3 + 1/6 = 4/6 + 1/6 = 5/6 (still a rational number).

Activity: Check whether 3/5 x 2/7 gives a rational number.
